Penrhyn Castle
If you're on holiday with Running Backwards and Family , National Trust is a must!
And so, here we are at Penrhyn Castle on the Menai Straits, the not so ancient home of the Pennant Family who made their fortune on Slavery, Sugar and Slate quarrying.
The house was built in the first half of the 19th century and based on an earlier castle. It was built in the 'Norman functional ' style which belies it's cathedral like interior, see extras.
The core is a 4 bed family house to reflect the Lord and his family. But to impress visitors in the absence of super yachts and Ferraris he built extensions after extensions and gardens after gardens.
It was handed to the National Trust virtually intact.
It's really impressive and well worth the visit.
Thank you RB who is determined to educate us!!
