Crash bang wallop

A beautiful sunny day and so after lunch we strolled down the hill for ice cream, standing in the queue in the eiscafe we heard a bang, that kind of bang you hear in movies that usually heralds an abundance of emergency vehicles...we turned around and through the window we could see a medium sized car now at almost right angles to the road had driven into a house...the fire engine was the first to arrive (it probably took longer for the call to be directed to the right station house than for it to drive (with sirens blaring) there, then the cops, then the emergency doc, an ambulance, more cops...chaos. 
Apparently the elderly gent was attempting to parallel park on the other side of the street, whether he was trying to depress the brake or the clutch I don't know, but I'm fairly sure driving into a "Denkmalschuz*" house was not on his list of things to do on a Bank holiday Monday.
