Pobull Fhinn . . .

. . . or Finn's People. This is one of many stone circles in the Western Isles, but the finest in North Uist. It was built between 3000 BC (the Neolithic Age) and 1500 BC (the Bronze Age). The makers of the circle first had to create a level platform for it, as it is built on the side of a hill (the loch is further below than it appears here). There are 40 stones in total, although around half of them are no longer standing.

As with all stone circles, there are many theories as to their purpose, but we do not know for certain. They probably fulfilled different functions, but must have served as focal points for the religious and spiritual needs of their communities. I find them quite awe-inspiring places and this was no exception.


A much better day today. Still very windy, but we had sun, blue skies and it was warm. We walked round the local RSPB Reserve - Balranald. A wonderful 3 mile walk over the machair and skirting the, sometimes sandy and sometimes rocky, bay. No Corncrakes yet, but lots of other birds by the water's edge.
