The Business End of a Bee

There was a little cluster of bees on the pole at the bottom of the Spike Walk. The only thing we could figure out that could possibly interest them was that it is a popular pee spot for dogs! They were very intent on whatever it was and I was able to get very close for a picture. When I realized I could see not only its stinger but its, er, tongue?, proboscus?. I'm not up on my bee anatomy and this is not a common honey bee, but I'm sure somebody out there will know the answers.

Speaking of odd sightings, I was sitting on the couch when I happened to look up and see a turkey strolling down the roof by the porch. Turkeys don't strike me as the brightest of birds, but this one has figured out how to get into the fenced yard .It was all by itself, which is unusual , so it is  probably  a young male jake. He strolled up the hill, checked out the compost pile and then flew over/jumped the fence. John is working on a cage for the lettuce, for we're sure the turkey would enjoy the tender morsels....

It's been a peaceful day of beautiful weather and no construction. They have put windows in Janet and Paul's house and the framer who was just getting into his truck last night said they are just about ready for the siding. We're curious to see what kind of siding they use. The site on the other side has paused yet again for what looks like more concrete. We're none the wiser about what their house will look like or even quite where it will be.

The Cal Fire deadline for mowing weeds and dry grass has been moved up to next week. The guys have mowed everything up to the top fence and will be back next week to mow the field. Our two days of 90+F weather has gone quite a way toward drying out the grasses, and fire season has been officially declared. Winds are predicted for tonight but a red flag alert hasn't been announced since there is still some moisture left in the soil.

We're going to Bruce and Cindy's soon for a glass of wine and a report on what is happening with the log jam in the creek behind their house. A frustrating situation which hardly seems like their fault, but apparently their property ling goes to the middle of the creek and neither the county, state fish and game, the water agency nor the power company will step up to help, so they are liable.
