Perfectly wonderful children
J & J waited patiently, playing on their dad's phone and eating waffles, while their dad, one of Portland's wise young activists, filled me in on the last two years and his analysis of where we are right now. His father died of Covid the week after my daughter died, and we were both overwhelmed and unable to function for a while. We compared notes on mourning. He also has no memory of July, August, and September. Just when we were thinking we could function again, June Knightly was killed and our whole community went into mourning.
Now we think it's time to gather all our wounded and grieving people together for a love-in and some joy. We started planning that, and then as we were leaving the coffee house, I asked the kids if they'd like to do a jump for the camera. They were totally game. Extra: the barista outdid themself with the cat in the cup latte. No extra charge. (Extra.)
