Frank Meadow Sutcliffe

The last day of our workshop saw a critique session this morning with the intention of going out this afternoon.  The weather forecast, so unreliable these last few days, lived up to its unreliability as the afternoon was also a right-off as the rain never stopped. We did more critiquing after lovely lunch as a local cafe.  Check out the Rusty Shears if you are ever in Whitby.

After the workshop broke up I found I was the only one left in my B&B so that is a first. Out for dinner this evening I came across this statue of Frank Sutcliffe.  This is one of number of heritage statues around the town forming a trail tourists can follow.

Frank Meadow Sutcliffe was born in 1853 and was a Victorian photographer who captured everyday life, especially that of the local fishermen and their families. He was recognised as one of the finest photographers of his day, winning over 60 gold and silver medals from exhibitions around the world.  We are following in his footsteps. No digital cameras or phones for him!
