Black Grouse Breakfasting

This was a surprise this morning! In all there were about a dozen male “tetra lyres” (the French name which sounds so much prettier than “black grouse”) on a closed ski run I was skinning up. I suspect they were hungry after displaying earlier at dawn. Shame I missed the display but I shall be back now I know where this lek is. I now know why they display so early as an eagle flew overhead which sent the group into flight mode (a not very good extra). They are very easy targets for birds of prey as they are rather rotund and slow moving. They have wonderful snow shoes (second extra).

Huge thanks for all the appreciation of yesterday’s chamois which appear to have climbed high on the first Popular Page too.
