Beeslack

I slept in, so didn't have my long, monthly round-ending Turf walk. However, I did get out as the round ended and passed Beeslack House. It's now a nursing home, but was built for the local paper-maker Sir John Cowan in 1863. I mused on the name "Beeslack" - that I've learned means "bee hollow" - and how strange local names become so familiar. It's also the name of the nearby high school, even if doesn't convey an encouragement to endeavour! Penicuik itself is a name that some people struggle to pronounce, or spell when I use it on the phone. It comes from "Pen-y-cog", or "Hill of the Cuckoo" in the "Old Brythonic language (also known as Ancient British and the forerunner of modern Welsh)".

Back home, I did some bits of work - completing my exam and tidying up a presentation for tomorrow - whilst I listened to the commentary of the exciting "Old Firm" game - Rangers vs Celtic at football - with its (for me) very welcome result. Having not watched it for years, I was pleased to see my University win the Boat Race, and I also followed the text commentary of the Rotherham-Sutton EFL Cup Final. I knew it was being attended by JeriSimpson1986 and her sons, so was pleased for them when Rotherham came back twice from a goal down to win 4-2.
