Pieperrace Volendam

The Pieperrace is an annual two-day sailing competition for traditional Dutch flat-bottomed boats, sailed from Volendam.
The competition is the informal start of the charter season.

The event keeps alive the memory of the risky potato transports during world war II  (piepers) from Friesland, which Volendam fishermen carried out with their ships during the war years. Among other things, Amsterdam hospitals were supplied.
