An unexpected discovery in my garden today - not one, not two, but five healthy monarch butterfly caterpillars thriving and enjoying the summer-like sunshine. 

The paper wasps are no longer appearing in great numbers and at this stage of the season they are feeding on nectar rather than live caterpillars.

My hope now is that these late survivors have enough time to mature before cold weather arrives.
