Awaiting dumplings

Four friends coming for a meal tonight and slow cooker has been cooking the shin of beef most of the day.  I thought a stew would be in order as it is still pretty chilly.  Can't remember the last time I made dumplings, but as I have known my guests so long, it will not be a disaster if they are not up to scratch!
