Willkommen in Feilichplak
For the past God knows how long, I have been working on a novel. It is set - or rather it starts - on an island of the north coast of Germany, in Nordfriesland. It is here that Erskine Childers set The Riddle of the Sands; it is an evocative are that also led to Theodor Sturm's novel Der Schimmelreiter... it's a good place for a story.
All of the islands here were created on the same day: January 16, 1362 - St. Marcellus' Day. A massive storm surge swept out of the Atlantic and ripped into the soft, sandy land. Only the sturdier areas, made of geest, withstood the cataclysmic forces Nature threw at it. These became the islands.
Feilichplak isn't a real place, but it is based on Föhr, which is. I'm in the process of creating a backstory for the island - which is a lot more fun than writing the novel. So far I have rewritten several pieces of history, one of which involves the notorious Eustace the Pirate.
Anybody speak Frisian? Too much for hope for, I suspect.
