Arolla Glacier Grotto

This dramatic hole in the glacier appeared last year and it is not too difficult to get to on touring skis from Arolla. If you have time to look at the extras you can see it from a distance, under Mont Collon, also the amazing carved structures of the glacier. The group of high altitude skiers coming through cave gives scale. It was difficult to chose a main photo.

I am staying overnight with my old friend Joan. She was the first person I met in Switzerland 51 years ago, then married to the postmaster of Arolla but she is from Durham! I have talked about Joan before as I try to see her a couple of times a year.
