Over engineered?

Went to National Trust's Tyntesfield just outside Bristol today and so much to see in this interesting house formerly occupied by the Gibbs family who made their fortune from guano or bird poo! I was intrigued by this gate catch which must make me an anorak! But it was so over the top for its task.
