Municipal Planting Part 2
A bright bed of polyanthus in the semi-formal garden at the playpark known as 'The Granda Swings'. This name apparently refers not to an elderly park-keeper but the the position of the park at the west and once most affluent end of Fraserburgh where the grander folk once lived.
In the background is the ornate Saltoun Place Fountain. This was gifted to the Burgh in 1904 and was customised from a standard pre-cast design by having a key carrying ostrich placed on top of the dome. The ostrich appeared on the old Burgh coat of arms and is based on the bird which is part of the Saltoun arms but here has exchanged a horseshoe for the key to the Burgh.
The low building beyond that was the Burgh school from 1838 to 1882. Thomas Blake Glover, who made a major contribution to the industrial development of Japan, received his early education there.
