'The North Moat'.................!
In another attempt at one of 'my town' series....I took this pic while walking up town this morning.......and while I suppose it's not the most impressive thing to actually look at .......I think it's history is just amazing......so I'm transcribing what's on the information plaque....
The North Moat is built on the site of the Ancient Royal Residence of
the Kings of Leinster which according to Bardic tradition was founded
by Lewy of the Long Hand, over two thousand years ago.... The last king to live here was Cearbal who died in 904AD. The present moat which is one of the oldest man made structures in the town was built by the Vikings and dates from their invasion in the 9th century.
It is 30ft high and has a diameter of almost 300 feet at the base. The 18th century house on the summit was first used as a guard room, and later as a look-out post and helio-graph signal station by the British Army.
Amazing the history we walk by every day.....if only these places could talk.....!!!!
Kitty says what do I want to Blip a picture of an old grassy hill for when I could take a nice picture of him???
I told him he has no culture at all!!!!!!!
