Inside…. Everyone hides one desire

August 1984. Six of us had moved in to Blackwood Crescent. Filthy flat; complete with requisite mice; crack window panes and ghost.

We had a routine. We ate round the table. We all took a turn cooking… I was Tuesday Spaghetti Bolog. We did the shopping on Friday and got a take away and watched The Tube.

One night this video was on…. Wow. We were smitten. These guys were gorgeous!

Roll on two weeks. Song makes the charts. They are going to be on TOTP. We were beside ourselves. (Well the gals were… not so much Ken and Doug)

The intro plays. The camera turns to the guys. Eh? What are we looking at??? These two week skinny guys aren’t the guys in the video

Turns out this was our first experience of video filtering…. Muscles had been enhanced…. Teeth had been straightened, hair mussed…. Skin oiled.

Wow. Were we sadly introduced to the real world


We still loved the song tho … recorded the video on our trusty VHS and played it to ourselves before every exam!
