Totterdown Bridge (bridge 22)
This is the nearest bridge to my home, and I must have walked over it 1000s of times ( and driven a fair few). In the past it was the way I walked to work, now it’s for getting to the centre, going to my volunteer job, or just for the pleasure of walking by the river. It was built in 1889, and for exactly the same reason, that people in the new housing in Totterdown mostly worked the other side of the river. Local people asked for it to be built, but there were bureaucratic delays because then the north side was in Bristol, and the south (Totterdown) side was in Somerset. So people relied on ferries - but the river flows fast and powerfully here, and when a ferry capsized with several passengers lost, the authorities eventually got it built. Nowadays, it generally has traffic at a standstill in both directions, including huge lorries, as many waste and recycling enterprises are just to the north. So it’s strength is being tested in its 133rd year of service.
PS I forgot to say, Totterdown is now hidden by the new tower block, which I have mentioned in previous posts. It looks like it’s nearing completion on the outside, but all the inside stuff still needs doing.
