Weeping Mary

How does this blip's title fit in with this image? Well, Weeping Mary is the closest community to this... thing. Weeping Mary is a historically black community deep in the piney woods. Its name reportedly came from the 20th chapter of John, where Mary goes to the tomb of Jesus after he was crucified:

"...and when she had thus said, she turned herself back and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was not Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou. Whom seekest thou..."

In deep east Texas, this ramshackle structure appears to have for sale a variety of... things. On the front of the building is an old cash register (exposed to the elements for who knows how long), a pair of binoculars, some wheels, a badminton racket, and other things I'm not sure I want to know about. A sign advertises "Sawmill Parts." Off-screen to the right, the presumed owner was burning some trash (not sure how he decided what fit into that category) very close to his old wooden home. Wouldn't be doing that myself, except perhaps with the intent of a little rural renewal.

It's Cinco De Mayo today, when Mexican Independence Day is heavily celebrated, mostly by Anglos (most of whom with probably no clue as to the significance of the day) as an excuse to drink to excess. I'm not sure that an excuse is necessary here in Austin, with a reputation as the heaviest drinking town in America. I feel I should have an appropriate blip for the day, but I tend to avoid locations where people are drinking heavily and then driving.
