DJ Derek

This mural is right next to the M32, so everyone leaving Bristol gets to see it.
He had been an accountant but in 1977 he decided to be a DJ instead and had a 40 year career playing reggae, ska, rocksteady and dancehall. He always lived in St Paul’s and was much respected, playing at major festivals as well as locally. He was playing gigs regularly up to 2015 when he disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Sadly he had died when he was found.
He is much loved in Bristol, he was a bit different, a bit unconventional. This mural helps us remember him.
It was made by a group of several street artists. The wording behind the tree is ‘Sweet Memory Sounds’ which was the name he gave to his DJ sessions.
