The young man with the shovel is my maternal grandfather. He wouldn't have been much more than a boy when this was taken. He was trained in mold casting and went on to work for one of the best known Sheffield companies, Newton Chambers, famous for Churchill Tanks and Izal (that weird, funny-smelling loo roll that you could use as tracing paper!) A strange but true diversification!
I was watching Fred Dibnah last night (love Fred!) and he visited Sheffield and went to where the Newton Chambers' Thorncliffe Works once was. It made me think of my grandfather and this very photo. One of my faves.
