HALITE

This is a single crystal of Rock Salt....sodium chloride.  Commonly used in water softeners and in my part of the country on road sides to keep traffic moving smoothly in the snow and ice.

I chose this crystal as today's submission because, in short order, I'm heading outside with a large bucket of the stuff to spread all along the walkways.

Last night and into today, we were blessed with a freezing rain storm and the entire county is a skating rink. All local schools are closed for the day and NO ONE is going anywhere, except into the ditch if they're foolish enough to try driving to work. No job is worth getting yourself killed.

There's a bright side.....I was expecting a lot more freezing rain, enough to bring down trees and shut down the power grid. SO FAR, that has not happened.  Fingers crossed.
