St Rombout's Kathedraal, Mechelen
In Mechelen, Flanders today for meetings. However lucky enough to have time for a quick look at the city centre.
This blip was taken from in front of the town hall (where my meetings were held) and shows a bit of the Grote Markt, which is a square where the largest market took place. The buildings in front are shops and flats, but behind you can see St Rumbold's Cathedral and St Rumbold's Tower.
This is Mechelen's largest church and since 1559 the seat of the archbishop. The altar with the relics of St Rumbold, the city's patron saint, dominates the Gothic church. Though never finished, the tower dominates the centre of Mechelen.
Apparently it was never completed because of a combination of religious wars, city wars, a change in fashion, fear of collapse due to other tall towers in Europe collapsing at the time and running out of money.
The inside was quite something so I will try and tweet pictures from inside in addition to this blip.
This is my first time in Mechelen and it is a lovely town and looks well worth a visit.
