Transvaal Bushveld
On Thursday 30th April, 9 men comprising fathers, sons, grand sons, and sons in law, arrived at a well maintained game farm close to the border of Limpopo province and Botswana. It is situated near the town of Baltimore, high up in the old province of Transvaal. The vegetation is bushveld and it hosts much natural wildlife.
Some men went by car in order to tow a trailer stacked with provisions, while the others arrived by air. The farm has a landing strip that is kept in good order.
The purpose of the weekend was for fathers and sons to get together and to do the things that men love doing. In this case it was to hunt to prepare biltong (dried meat delicacy) for the long winter that is upon us.
Over the next two days, several Blou Wildebeest (Gnu) and Bush buck were hunted. There is a well equipped facility on the farm where the meat is processed, frozen or kept cool, whatever the need may be.
The thatch roof house is built on a koppie and encompasses much of the natural stone and rocks on the inside. Close to the house, but to one side, is a large lapa with a thatch roof where outdoor braais and barbeques take place.
A few meters away is a swimming pool. Needles to say that this area can reach very high temperatures.
There is a wooden deck around the house that provides a 360 deg. breath taking view of the surroundings. From here game is spotted and observed. The view from one of these sides stretches about 70 kms into the distance.
At the back of the house, there are sheers cliffs, about 30 meters down, on which baboons prance and play about. This image was taken (by Johan) toward one of these cliffs showing an indigenous tree growing from the rocks.
