Hill of Culsh viewpoint

Ah, the things we do in search of a blip! I took a detour on the way home this afternoon through the village of New Deer, north to the Culsh monument. I've often seen this memorial from the other roads around New Deer but never up close. It was built about 1875 to commemorate William Dingwall-Fordyce of Brucklay, Aberdeenshire's first MP, is made of ashlar granite and stands about 80ft high. It's a listed building that was restored by the old Banff & Buchan District Council in 1991.

It was built on the site of a stone circle, which like many of Aberdeenshire's stone circles had been built in settings with commanding views of the countryside. So that's my blip, the view of the Howe of Buchan, rather than the monument itself. It might well feature on another occasion!

By the way, it was freezing up there, still a bit of snow and such a snell wind. I didn't linger long!
