1965: President Johnson approves Operation Rolling Thunder
Quote Of The Day
"We should (?) could (?) bomb them back to the stone age .... until we have destroyed every work of man in North Vietnam."
(Air Force General Curtis LeMay)
Whether General LeMay said "should" or, as he later claimed, he actually said "could" and was misquoted, the United States military machine certainly tried their best to bomb the North Vietnamese back to the stone age.
"At the end of 1967, the C.I.A. estimated 27,900 military and 48,000 civilians killed and wounded. The U.S. government has estimated that 30,000 civilians were killed in total as a result of the operation."
(Wikipedia)
As I type this, 100,000 troops stand poised to potentially roll into Ukraine, and Serb nationalism seems ready to plunge Bosnia-Herzegovina back into the horrors of internecine war that were merely postponed three decades earlier. Ironically, it was on this day that Slobodan Milošević first stood trial for war crimes at The Hague.
