Expedition to Owl Crag!

More snowshoeing - After a couple of trips on frozen lakes, and in the forest behind our house, we decided to go up a real hill. We packed a lunch and drove to Owl Crag.
We've been here several times before, because it gives great views, and is a short if steep walk from the road. Perhaps something to consider today was that there is an unlocked cabin near the top. There was a chilly wind and it would be good to have a place to retreat to when we ate our lunch.
As you can see here we made it to the top. Actually we didn't need the snowshoes as the path had been well trodden and the snow was hard. However, we used them anyway and they worked well, especially on the steep sections where we used the heel-lift for the first time. We admired the view from the top, chatted to another walker, and then retreated to the cabin and had lunch.
On the way down I detoured off the path to see how the snowshoes worked on steeper slopes with untrodden snow. They worked very well until I got a bit cocky and came down one steep section at some speed. Suddenly one snowshoe stopped dead, and a split second later I nose-dived into the snow! No worries because the snow was deep enough to absorb all the energy but getting up took some working out and I ended up with gloves and sleeves full of snow! I do enjoy a small adventure.
The extra shows Jan taking her blip, inside the cabin.  The cabin is well equipped with a stove, cooking utensils, and furniture. How generous to leave this place open, and also that visitors seem to respect that generosity.
