How was it for you? What do you see?

Some saw the Thatcher years as the best thing since sliced bread, just what Britain needed to make it 'great' again - to take it from its knees to a giant amongst countries. Some flourished: they bought their council houses; they started businesses with the help of the Enterprise Allowance scheme; others struggled; there was the year-long miners strike. I could go on. But there's no point really. She is dead but her legacy is alive and kicking.

The wonderful politician and statesman Tony Benn summed things up beautifully for me:

"Mrs Thatcher was a politician that believed what she thought, did what she said she was going to do and that gave her a certain integrity. However, she used that trust to make war on the working class. She taught us the meaning of class war through campaigns against the miners and the introduction of the Poll Tax. We are still dealing with the effects of that 'Neo-Con' economic experiment" Tony Benn

She is not - thank god - to be given a state funeral but a 'ceremonial funeral with full military honours'. Her body will be transported from Westminster to St Pauls Cathedral for the ceremony then on to a private cremation. The date has yet to be announced.

To have her buried, I believe, would create a site which would be the focus of much anger and, yes, hatred.

This evening Roland reminded me of an agreement we made with a dear friend of ours - Nick - who died a few years ago. We agreed that on the Saturday following Thatcher's death we would meet in Trafalgar Square. Come hell or high water I am going to find the money for us both to go to Trafalgar Square on Saturday.
