Inside Oldway Mansion

We went on a tour today of Oldway Mansion in Paignton. This was the home of the Singer family. Isaac Merritt Singer made his fortune by  inventing an improved sewing machine and pioneering the hire purchase payment method.
His life is a very complicated story but he bought an estate in Paignton and had a house built- which developed into Oldway Mansion. In 1946 it was purchased by Paignton Urban District Council for £46000, and used as admin offices. It has been closed since 2012. We were privileged to be shown round the accessible parts by the Friends of Oldway. Pictured is part of the entrance hall.The extra is the door to the former Mayor’s Parlour,
