Handy Device

Bit of an unusual entry for me.

I stopped in at the local library on the way home from work to look for something new to listen to during my commute. I made a beeline for the audio books and as I was looking through the titles was surprised that someone behind me was obviously on a phone call or watching a youtube video or something. It seemed oddly invasive for the setting. When I finally turned around to look there was nobody there. It was a display set up in the corner of the room with a video going. I went over to see what was apparently so interesting it should be left playing on a loop in the library. The woman in the video was showing how she used an antique, hand cranked knitting machine to make wool socks. I'll confess, I was gobsmacked. And there in a display case were a bunch of beautiful socks! And there next to the case was the device itself!

Naturally, as soon as I verified that I was indeed alone, I snapped a photo of the device, then picked it up and quickly ran out the front door and around the corner. I waited for a few breathless moments to see if anyone had noticed, but heard nothing. So I stashed the thing behind a dumpster out back so I could bring my car around and shove it in the trunk to bring home.

Ok actually I only took the photo. I don't know why I found this thing so impressive, but there it is. The idea of cranking out a nice pair of wool socks in under an hour seems like it would be real luxury.

Perhaps this device is common and familiar to everyone. If not here are a couple of things to look at for more information.

In the end I checked out a copy of Master and Commander, even though I've already read the book three times.
