Old Buildings V
The Cordwainer’s Hall was built in 1345 as the meeting place for the Cordwainer’s Guild. This lovely old building is in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England and is now a fine restaurant. Guilds, were important commercial institutions in medieval times that were granted trading monopolies by the Crown in return for the payment of taxes. A cordwainer was a shoemaker or shoe repairer.
