Kirkwall, a Dreich Day

There was nearly a riot in Kirkwall Post Office today.  I’m in the PO about once a year and I popped in to post some samples south.  Or so I thought.  The girl a’hint the counter indicated such a transaction was impossible.  I’ve been posting similar samples for years (I indicated).  By this time folk in the queue were becoming restive.  I even knew two of the folk. Things went up a notch when she went to get her supervisor, they were lucky I couldn’t get mine.  They saw no humour whatsoever when I asked for a penny black, or a dog licence.  I even tried phoning Snapper’s ‘Dilemma Line.’  The outcome is that Mr Smith will have to be patient.

Speaking of patients things became a bit more focused when I went along to see Davie in the Balfour Hospital.  They have withdrawn all of his chemo as he’s not fit for it.  He used to be a professional saxophone player / music  teacher.  A colleague of his had taken in two plastic saxophones the previous evening.  I never knew such things existed – typically they are used for primary bairns.  Anyhow D asked me to pass him the bag and he assembled them both and serenaded the ward.  He has amazing spirit.  He consumed the tiffin that CMC sent in and he’s working his way through the whisky I took along last week.
