Look on my works...

... ye mighty, and despair.

This was once a grand entrance to the Vickers steelworks in Sheffield's East End, whose foundations date back to the 1830s. No one has been through those dusty portals for many a year.  So it's still elegant - but all the same, it's my contribution to Derelict Sunday this week (thanks to Marlieske for hosting).

The building is Grade II listed, and the company still exists, now as Sheffield Forgemasters. I think that after many a financial wobble,  it was taken over by the Ministry of Defence last year in order to rescue it from collapse (which would have risked the loss of some strategic defence supplies; that was the government's concern, rather than preserving jobs and skills).

There's an interesting timeline here, on the Forgemasters website:

Richard and I drove out there this afternoon, carefully avoiding any other human contact as I'm still isolating until the end of tomorrow.  I wanted to make a second attempt at photographing a sculpture in the Forgemasters main works entrance (see extras).  This is a better attempt than my previous ones, but still not quite the light, or the  shot, that I really want. There'll be another trip.
