South Tyne Trail

Today's the day . . . . . . . . . . . . to branch out

A trip south today to Kendal - but on the way, a diversion eastwards into the Pennines.

There was time for a quick walk along the South Tyne Trail which runs for 10 miles from Alston in the south to Featherstone Park Station in the north, using the trackbed of the former Haltwhistle to Alston Branch Railway Line.  During the 18th and 19th centuries, the North Pennines were at the heart of the Industrial Revolution.  The Alston Moor mining field was rich in lead, coal and limestone.  The Haltwhistle to Alston Branch Railway was built to transport these minerals north up to the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway.

Today the track is used by dog walkers, ramblers and cyclists - and is a very pleasant place to be . . . . . . . .
