The Edge of the Wold

By gladders

Last glimpse

At last the pattern of grey, sunless muffled days is broken.  Today the sun shone and the wind blew.  As I came home the gritters were out, anticipating a freezing night under clear skies.

Another view from Sandside as the sun sets over the viaduct. There had been a huge number of gulls gathered on the mudflats waiting to move down the estuary into Morecambe Bay.  Most left just before this was taken when a man and his dog walked along the edge of the marsh, the man making no effort to restrain the dog from running into the water to disturb everything.  This in spite of signs asking people to stick to the path I was on so as not to disturb the birds.  The extensive Arnside salt marsh has the potential to support a large number of roosting birds at this time of year, and good numbers of breeding waders and ducks in the season - but the potential is never fulfilled for this reason.

Back at home, we had a big sort out in the airing cupboard.  This left me with a large number of unmatched socks.  Where do their partners go?  Surely this is one of the biggest unanswered questions of all time?
