The Three Rivers fountain

Here is something very Aussie for Australia Day. The Three Rivers fountain commemorates the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh to Adelaide, South Australia in 1963. It is the central component of a redevelopment of Victoria Square that took place in the 1960s.

The water feeding this fountain come from the rivers Murray, the Onkaparinga and the Torrens, and the design is symbolic of this. The rivers were represented by human figures and birds. The three figures also echoed the triangular site made by the diagonal roadways. The whole construction was designed to be ‘a spectacle’, able to be viewed from all angles.

The Three Rivers Fountain is a 1960's icon by one of Australia's most revered artists Dr John Dowie AM. Dowie was a noted Adelaide artist and sculptor, and his work can be seen throughout the city.
The church on the right is St Francis Xavier's Catholic Cathedral.

NOTE: I have now added the full details on the Credenza that I blipped yesterday. Apologies that they were not included at the time.
