Synchronised dabbling
These two male shoveler ducks won the drakes synchronised pairs dabbling competition this afternoon at Leighton Moss. The extra shows the winning mixed pair.
I went to see the competition that was being held in the coastal lagoons. It was another strange, still, silent grey day blanketed in dense cloud. Apart from the shoveler dabbling completion, the birding was a bit like the day, quiet and uneventful, just the usual scattering of teals, wigeons, shelducks and redshanks, and the only noise offered by the honking grey lag geese.
Back at base, Gus has had another good day, and he managed a full circuit of his regular evening walk. He's always better in the evenings when the analgesic effect of his mealtime paracetamol peaks in helping him with his arthritic joints.
