Cool Tool. Lumix M4/3 14mm
I bought this beam compass a couple of years ago for a furniture project which involved large radius curves. That project, a recreation of the highly unusual bookshelves in Antonio Salieri's music room, as depicted in the fabulous 1984 Milos Forman movie, Amadeus, never came to fruition. Perhaps before it's all over...
Today, the beam compass came out of the closet - so to speak. It's not a new or high-tech tool, but it's a beautifully-made and beautifully-presented exemplar of its ilk from the innovative Canadian company, Lee-Valley/Veritas. They supply three trammel bars which, screwed together will allow a radius of up to 39 inches to be drawn. Extras can be ordered if necessary. There are two hardened steel centers, one with a micro-adjuster, a pencil holder at one end, and the most ingenious accessory, a little disc with a depression in it embedded in one of the case ribs. This is to be taped to the center of the panel being marked out so that the center spike doesn't leave a crater in the wood. Clever!
