Spreading the Word

The Community Fridge group were out again, giving away ex-supermarket food that was otherwise destined for landfill. They managed to get rid of it all in an hour. I was there for a while and it was interesting to see the reluctance of many people to accept 'free food'. When a couple of the people from the group briefly went to check out the food bank activity along the road that someone had mentioned was going on I did a little bit to cover for them. (It turned out the food bank was only accepting donations of tinned goods and nothing that the Community Fridge group were giving away, which was all much more perishable.) Anyway, I found that people were much more likely to accept things if it was pitched as 'could you do us a favour by stopping this from going to landfill'. rather than 'would you like some free food'.
