Wellington Monument

The images collated for today's pic are from our lunchtime walk to the Wellington Monument on the Blackdown Hills on this clear and frequently sunny day with panoramic views of the Quantocks and Mendips. Beautiful British countryside.  Other activities included visiting Chris and Keith in their lovely original C17th farmhouse. Fascinating rambling building on several levels with various features of historical charm, lovingly restored and well, just beautiful :)

The Wellington Monument is a 175-foot-high triangular obelisk and the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), the British general, also known as the 'Iron Duke' who led the British forces to victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and who later served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.  A site of local interest, it is of particular significance for Nancy, who in September 2018 walked  the 189 miles from Cleopatra's Needle on the banks of the River Thames to the Wellington monument, raising £5,500 towards the restoration of this National trust managed heritage site. We walked slightly less than that today (!) but her three woofers enjoyed it all the same.
