Wandsworth walk

We went on a ten-mile walk around Wandsworth today. It was another of the local history walks. We did a lot of them during the lockdowns last year but we haven’t done any recently. We took the train to Earlsfield and then walked down Garratt Lane to the site of London’s first licensed cinema and, then with a narrative of the industrial history of the area, to the riverside and all the redevelopments going on there.  After all these years living near the River Wandle we finally got to see where the Wandle meets the Thames.

It was a really interesting walk - although long - and, as always, we discovered some new places. Part of the walk is along the Wandsworth one-way system which is quite a famous bottleneck in South West London (and we learnt was only ever meant to be temporary back in the 1960s). There’s a disused carpark at one point ad the old signs are still up. I wonder how many places around the city are still showing 0181 numbers?

Back via Earlsfield and a little coffee stop at Haydon’s Road and a long track back to Raynes Park.
