On the way to visit friends in Peebles we stopped at Innerleithen and I noticed this tiled doorway.  In the first half of the 20th century, Buttercup Dairy Company shops were found in many places mainly in eastern Scotland with some in northern England.  There were up to 250 Buttercup Dairy shops selling mostly milk products and eggs and they all had a similar design of ceramic tiles with a centrepiece depicting a girl holding a buttercup under the chin of a cow and a bunch of buttercups in her apron.  The craftmanship and detail in the decoration of the tiles is remarkable as were other aspects like the entrances and fascias. The one in Innerleithen is one of the few with the decorative entrance still in evidence although it has not been a dairy since 1951 and is now a craft studio.  The last shop closed in Edinburgh in 1965.
