Berthelot Street

This steep street which runs down to the High Street used to be one of the main routes out of town. It is too steep for a horse to pull a loaded cart so donkeys had to be used instead. This is one theory as to why we Guernsey folk are called donkeys. And I can tell you that we are very proud to be Guernsey Donkeys.
And us Guernsey Donkeys call the Jersey folk Crapauds, which means toads. 11,000 or so years ago at the end of the last Ice Age the melting ice meant rising tides and Guernsey became separated from Jersey and Europe. As the rides rose we chased any toads on Guernsey towards Jersey and to this day there are no toads in Guernsey while there are in Jersey. Jersey people don’t embrace the Crapaud label and in recent years call themselves Jersey Beans. I’ve no idea why! I’ve always known them as crapauds..
