The modern torpedo

Editors gaff...in my last blip i named Walter Whitehead as the inventor of the modern torpedo. Let this be a lesson to anyone from the male genus...do not try to multi task, it doesnt work.

So. The inventor on the modern torpedo was Mr Robert Whitehead.
Robert Whitehead was the son of a textiles worker from Bolton Lancashire. Trained as a draughtsman at the Manchester institute.
After working at a shipyard in Toulon France, he worked around the world, including Milan and trieste on the coast of Austria. His work was noticed by the owners of the Fonderia Metalli, foundry in Croatia, was employed by them, whereas he bacame the manager of the foundary in 1856.

His first torpedo was tested with the help of his 12 year old son John. Moving away from the normal shore launch to the now more widely used ship launch. The torpedo thence became known as the Whitehead torpedo. This tribute to the great man takes pride of place in the Whitehead gardens and sits at the foot of the Whitehead clock tower.
