Dumbarton Rock
The castle on the rock is the longest continuously fortified site in Scotland dating back 1500 years. It is well worth visiting to explore its distinguished royal history and a climb up the steps to the top of the volcanic plug is rewarded with interesting views south across the River Clyde and north across Dumbarton town and onwards to Ben Lomond. I was glad to have just a brief blink of sun lighting up the south face before a prolonged deluge.
