Light Pillars over Scapa Flow

I saw this when I first looked out in the morning.  I quickly grabbed my camera and tripod and got this before it disappeared.  Although it looks a bit like the aurora behind clouds it is apparently light pillars created by the oil rigs moored in Scapa Flow.
I'd love to know the science behind this.
