Down By The Bay....
..Did you Ever See A....
harbour full of ice?
goose hanging out with his buddies?
duck on an ice floe?
swan trapped in ice?
Not a watermelon growing anywhere, but lots of other amazing things are to be seen down at the lake.
Today was no exception. It was very cold, minus16C, but worth the trip. The sky was heavy with cloud that didn't quite make it down to the horizon, leaving a lovely band of white between the water and the sky. There was snow in the air. The geese were gathered by the hundreds seeking shelter along the shore by the lighthouse .. whereas the ducks and swans had sought refuge in the harbour, which meant weaving their way around a mass of little ice floes ....
One moment I could not capture for a blip but did record on video was the struggle of two swans trying to break out of the mass of floating ice in the harbour and get to open water. The one swan, the designated driver, kept trying to get on top of the ice, but could not, but managed to get up high enough on each try to use its breast to break the ice enough that eventually it was able to create a path through it. The other swan just followed along patiently in its wake..tra la la la "Where You Lead I Will Follow" etc....
It was somewhat disconcerting to watch - but I assume this happens a lot and a swan knows how to get itself out of that predicament...or knows another swan who does and can just follow along behind!
