Neidpath Viaduct

Neidpath Viaduct a few miles to the west of Peebles - built in 1864 to carry the Symington-Peebles stretch of the Caledonian Railway over the River Tweed. It is made of sandstone and sits 9.75 metres (32 feet) high over the river and has 8 arches and beautiful cast iron parapet railings. It is curved and forms a beautiful shape as it crosses the river.

Today it carries a footpath across the River Tweed and forms part of a spectacular old railway walk alongside the river which takes in Neidpath Castle, the viaduct and the smaller Lyne Station Viaduct. All the way along there are interesting remnants from the railway - it's easy to imagine the sight of the steam trains chugging along the line, and equally the wonderful views of the Tweed Valley that the passengers must have had as they emerged from the Neidpath Tunnel to cross the viaduct.
