Hairy

I was somewhat surprised to suddenly see a hairy woodpecker out in front of the porch eating birdseed. We have a lot of visits from downy woodpeckers, but far fewer from hairies. They look pretty much alike, but the hairy is a good deal bigger than the downy, and has a MUCH more formidable bill. This is a male (red on his head) and it amused me to see him looking at the white-throated sparrow that was trying to eat in the same spot. Woodpeckers in general always look so awkward when they try to stand on a flat surface.
