Anne's Daily Encounters

We walked !

What wonderful day we had walking down from Vamos up to Vrisses and back; all thro' the countryside; no mask on our faces, coz we're alone on the roads and in the fields, as we also walked dirt road, sheep tracks.  ~  we walked 18 kms.

Here we had a coffee and slice of cake, offered to us by the cook from the little monastery we visited; where only one monk lives and at times he receives one or two fellow monks from other monateries, for works or performing special services in the church. Today was another religious festive day; that is Agios Fotismo. All waters are blessed by the priests and the cross is thrown into the sea/waters and swimmers battle to catch it to hand the cross over to the priest, who will then reward the one who got the cross from the waters with a golden chain with the orthodox cross as pendant. This ritual is also performed in the Russian Orthodox countries.

But initally this church performance was denounced by the authorities of Chania, because of the pandemic measures; so we took to the fields, rather than Chania harbour... where after all, the blessing of the waters with the cross was performed ofcourse :-)  at the least they had three souls less as we weren't there.
